No Commercial Licence is available for this font, it was created from contributions to the Mail Art Typeface project in 2004 and is free for all uses.<br />

From the end of 2003, I sent out 150 or so snailmail and email invitations to mailartists whose graphic design flair led me to hope that they would each be keen to contribute a single character for a typeface, MAILART.  In addition, I placed an invitation in the fonts section of my website (www.keithbates.co.uk) and also asked fellow mailartists to recommend another participant if they wished.<br />
<br />
It didn’t take long for the creative juices to flow, the ten digits arrived almost immediately - perhaps numbers are treated with greater urgency than letters? - and I began to receive an eclectic array of freeform typography.  Thankfully, most people kept more or less to the brief, but a few mailartists were so free in their interpretation that one or two characters were illegible and I had to politely request some reworking.  Most mailartists have cheerfully modified their ideas in pursuit of readability and consistency.<br />
<br />
I have also permitted myself the luxury of making minor alterations in the interests of clarity and greater consistency- for instance in altering some proportions to make the x height and cap height of letters more uniform.  I have also emboldened some characters that seemed incongruously thin.  I hope no-one feels that I have trodden on their creative toes!<br />
<br />
Thank you to all participants, and special thanks to those mailartists who stepped in at short notice to fill last minute gaps!  I hope you agree that the end result possesses a fragmentary unity worthy of our efforts and that you will be keen to use this display font for titles, headings and anywhere that needs un petit peu of postal punkiness.<br />
